Town's efforts praised despite postponement

SWINDON Town chief executive Nick Watkins has hailed the 'fantastic effort' by volunteers and the club's staff after they worked through the night to try and ensure today's game against Burton went ahead.

The club yesterday invested in a heated dome while heating blowers were placed around the pitch to ensure frost did not set in.

However, around 30 per cent of the pitch was deemed unplayable by the referee at a 10am inspection this morning, and consquently the game was called off.

But regardless of the outcome, Watkins was delighted with the efforts of those who tried to ensure the game had the best chance possible of going ahead.

“I cannot thank the team enough," he told the Advertiser.

"(stadium manager) Mark Isaacs and his maintenance team, the groundsman and the volunteers all worked through the night to get the game on.

“Consequently it is devastating for them to have the game cancelled at the last minute.

“But it was a fantastic effort and I think it typifies Swindon Town and what we are trying to do to get games on.

“We can’t beat nature, we can try and beat the opposition but we can’t beat nature.”
