Connell defies illness to fire Swindon to victory
10:41pm Tuesday 21st February 2012
ALAN Connell climbed off his sickbed to score twice and help Swindon to battle for a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury tonight.
The striker had felt unwell throughout today but was desperate to play a part in such a crucial game and was named among the substitutes by Paolo Di Canio.
And he climbed off the bench at the start of the second half to first equaliser and then score the winner that secured three vital points that have sent Swindon to the top of League Two.
“I wasn’t particularly well today," he admitted. "I haven’t eaten too much and have been in bed most of the day.
“I felt fine when I got on the pitch and thankfully I feel it was the right decision in the end. I am delighted with the two goals I scored."
Connell has found himself scoring some vitally important goals for Swindon this year, and the former Grimsby frontman admitted he is just happy to be scoring for the club, regardless of the importance of the goals.
He added: "Every time I score for Swindon it is a great feeling. I love playing for this team and I love the fans here.
"I am pleased I scored some important goals tonight, especially because it took us to the top of the table, and hopefully I can score more important goals before the end of the season.
